Day Trip: Praia – Assomada – Tarrafal
Depart from Praia and head into the countryside, passing through São Domingos with a few photo stops along the way. Continue to Assomada, one of Santiago’s main cities, where you can visit the local market filled with fresh and traditional products, and explore the vibrant city center.
Next, discover Serra da Malagueta Natural Park, the island’s highest mountain range, known for its stunning landscapes, rare plants, and birdlife.

Once a thriving center known as Ribeira Grande, it served as a key stop for trade and the slave market. Today, Cidade Velha is a peaceful town filled with history and archaeological sites that reveal how its people lived centuries ago.

The Calabaceira–Cidade Velha Trekking is a guided hiking experience that beautifully combines nature, culture, and history. Starting in the green Calabaceira Valley, you’ll follow an easy 5 km trail (around 2–3 hours) leading to Cidade Velha, the first city of Cape Verde and a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During the walk, you’ll pass through a landscape dotted with centuries-old baobab trees, fertile farmland, and traditional plantations of sugarcane, mango, and other tropical fruits. Along the way, there’s a chance to meet local farmers and discover how rum is still produced using age-old methods at a local distillery.
Once you reach Cidade Velha, your guide will take you through its most iconic sites, including the Convent of São Francisco, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the famous Rua da Banana, and the ruins of the old Cathedral. The journey ends at the Fortaleza de São Filipe, perched high above the town, where you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the valley and coastline while learning about the city’s past as a vital colonial hub and its defense against pirate attacks.
